About Drivers & Gods

"If everything seems to be under control, the gods aren't noticing you."

A competitive network multiplayer racing game where players take different roles in a race against each other. Each round they are either placing obstacles on the track to trick their opponents or control a vehicle. With the right mixture of tactics and skill only one can win the tournament.
Project developed as practical work for Graz University of Technology lecture [Game Design and Development 2018].

How to Play

  • Host or join a local network game or use the online matchmaking.
  • Check the top left corner if you are playing as god or driver.
  • As driver try to finish the course as fast as possible.
  • As god try to place obstacle on the track to slow other drivers down.
The car racing game Drivers and Gods is a pure multiplayer game. To start a race, players have to join a network game. Click on "Play" in the main menu to find a matchmaking overview. On the bottom you can host or join a local area network (LAN) game. The second option given is to play over the internet.
Create or join a online game using the matchmaker interface. The online game traffic is sent over a relay server hosted by Unity in the cloud, that should avoid issues with firewalls or NATs. Note that the LAN matchmaking however is the safer method.
Pro Tip: You can choose your player name and your car using the wrench icon on the lower right in the main menu.
As the map loads and the race starts one of the players is chosen to have the role god assigned. You can see your role on the upper left corner of the user interface. The drivers challenge is to drive through each checkpoints and finish the race before all other drivers.
The almighty god however has several magical objects at hand to influence the race and with some strategic moves have an impact on the rankings of the tournament.
There are 6 obstacles that can be placed on the map. As a god use your mouse and left click to choose from the items at the bottom. Another left click places the object if allowed, shown via green or red place marker. You can also rotate objects using the mouse scroll wheel or cancel the current selection using the right mouse button.
  • Boxes are the simplest obstruction to be placed. Feel like a delivery service driver before Christmas and block the street so there is no way around. But as our Christmas gifts those boxes are fragile and tend to break on collision.
  • Trevor the sheep starts in one direction and keeps running. Don't be fooled by the fluffy look, any driver will stop before Trevor not to crash the car on this tough buddy.
  • Ice is a race car worst enemy. If you want to keep on track, go slowly over this obstacle and avoid jerky movements.
  • Control invert is a global effect that has an impact on all drivers. Can you turn your brain to keep in track?
  • Clouds have an bad influence on driving. If you don't know where to go, you probably won't go anywhere. There is no way around those floating white things in the sky so better try to guess your position and don't loose yourself.
  • Gun turrets are mean and clever. Once placed a turret will keep track of players and try to hit them off the track. Beware: Those weapons unfortunately do not distinguish between friend and foe and might shoot you of the course as well.
Placing obstacles will cost you an amount of time credit shown in the upper right corner. Don't panic: As time passes by, the credits increase constantly so you have the choice to spam the drivers with lots of boxes or save some money for a fierce cloud or even a car breaking turret.
Not much left to say for the drivers: Steer your car using "WASD" or "Arrow Keys" on your keyboard and avoid obstacles to go fast. Speed your way through the maps, keep your competitors behind as there is only one first place to come out of the tournament.
